Guru Careers Update: Junior at Lehigh University Secures Internship

Elise Heilman, Junior at Lehigh University recently secured an internship with us here at GradeGuru. Check out what Elise has to say about landing her position through our Guru Careers Program!

1. Why did you apply to a position through GradeGuru Careers?

I have used GradeGuru over the past few years as a way to both share study guides I have made and to compare my notes with other students’ while preparing for tests. After receiving an e-mail from GradeGuru Careers describing the marketing internship, I got really excited at the opportunity to combine my interest in marketing with working at a relevant and growing online community.

2. How do you think an internship will benefit you in your major/field of interest?

The internship will help me to apply concepts I learn in the classroom to a real-life setting, as well as teach me things that you can’t learn in class. Specifically, I am excited to have the opportunity to see firsthand the changing role of technology and the internet in achieving a company’s business goals. I want to see how the use of social media (such as blogs, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) can help companies target, and stay relevant with, their intended demographic. These are things that can really only be learned firsthand and will definitely help me in my future marketing courses.

3. How was applying to GradeGuru Careers different than applying to other internship and job opportunity sites?

Applying to GradeGuru Careers was different than other opportunities because the GradeGuru team is very hands-on and personable. They are friendly and always available to answer any questions, which made the process of finding an internship less intimidating.

4. Do you have any additional tips/recommendations you’d like to share with the GradeGuru community or other students seeking internships?

My advice for anyone looking for internships is to follow up. Don’t think that the process ends after you have sent off your resume, because the deciding factor for recruiters could be the level of interest you have shown in their company. Also don’t be discouraged, you will find the right opportunity if you don’t give up!

Today’s Campus Interviews GradeGuru Founder Emily Sawtell

Jeff Wendt from Today’s Campus recently sat down with our founder Emily Sawtell to discuss the motives behind GradeGuru and what changes she foresees in the future for the educational technology landscape.

Check out some of the Q&A from the segment:

How might GradeGuru benefit a college?

It provides a ready ability to build community and camaraderie among classmates.  Commuter schools, community colleges and online schools benefit greatly when they provide such.  Also, any college or university can use GradeGuru to help students improve their study habits, and thus improve student performance without taxing faculty.

Do you see a killer app on the horizon?

Many of the magic apps of the future will be driven by two success factors.  Do they serve students well?  Do the apps themselves inter-operate well?

GradeGuru Silver Gurus highlighted in Unigo & WSJ’s “What to Expect”

The folks over at Unigo and WSJ on Campus recently included two of our Silver Gurus in their article titled “How to Pick the Right Classes” where students weighed in on how they learned to go about picking the right classes and what the best strategies for doing so are.

Here’s what our Gurus had to say:

Take classes that you’re interested in! If you don’t like the material, then you will regret it, and you probably won’t do as well. You can probably find classes that you are at least semi-interested in to fill even your most dreaded requirements. For example, I had to fulfill a science requirement, and to do that, I took a human evolution and disease class, which was absolutely fascinating. And despite the fact that science was never my best subject, I did so well in that class because I was so interested.”

-Kaylin Dalrymple, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Using online resources like GradeGuru can be very helpful when looking into a course. Just as with anything else in life, if you have an idea of what you’re about to get into, you’ll understand it so much better. It’s like following directions: if you can review the directions and a map before you begin your trip, you find it a lot easier to navigate throughout, rather than having a GPS yell, ‘merge left NOW!’ when you’re in the far right lane on an eight-lane highway.”

-Erica DeVasier, Indiana University Bloomington
